Scholarships, Workships and Financial Aid

The cost of your college education inevitably rests upon you, the student, and your family.  The Institute for Global Youth Studies attempts to direct and assist students and their families financial aid resources based upon their eligibility, the institutions to and from which they may be transferring, and other criteria.

Application for Financial Aid through Union University or Other Universities

The Institute for Global Youth Studies works in close cooperation with Union University.  Policies which control the University generally also apply to the Institute in all matters which relate to both institutions.  If a student intends to transfer to Union University after spending a semester at the Institute, we direct the student to the appropriate department of Union University to apply for student aid, loans, etc., there.  When a student transfers into the Institute from another university but intends to return to that institution after studying for a semester at the Institute, we suggest that the student seek financial aid first from that university.   In all cases, we suggest that students investigate the possibilities at their disposal through their hometown bank, church student scholarship assistance, and other means available to them locally.

Application for Scholarships & Workships through the Institute

We strive to help make your education more affordable by offering  our services to assist you in your planning for your academic experience here.

Students who desire financial aid but who are new students or are students who have no past or future affiliation with another university may be eligible for limited financial assistance through the Institute by means of these sources:

·       Institute Workships:  Workship is an on-campus employment program funded by the Institute.  The Workship program enables a student to learn ministry skills while making a contribution to that ministry.  You may choose to help defray the costs of your Institute education by working in the Institute Workship program.  Certain factors will be considered in matching students with jobs.  These include such things as the skills and experience of the student, the availability of a suitable job, and the financial need of the student. Please remember that Workship opportunities are limited, so one’s eligibility does not guarantee you a job. Hours are limited to approximately 8-12 hours per week, depending upon the nature of the ministry tasks assigned.  Time spent engaged in ministry tasks will be credited toward the tuition costs at the Institute.

·       Scholarship resources: Institute Scholarships and other scholarship possibilities may be available.  Institute scholarship awards are credited directly toward the student’s Institute account.

·       Nearby business employment opportunities: Employment opportunities are available from time to time, depending upon area business needs.  The Institute discourages employment which negatively impacts the student’s academic pursuits.  Employment may be available within a 20-minute drive of the Institute for those students who have a means of transportation are who are approved by the Institute to seek outside employment.  For more information about employment, students may contact the Institute office for a list of possible employment about which we have been notified by area businesses.  Employment opportunities change frequently and may not be available until a few weeks or days prior to the beginning of the semester.

WORKSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

These are the steps to follow for an Institute Workship position:

Students who wish to apply for any of the Institute-related opportunities should follow the steps below.  A student interested in a Workship position at the Institute must complete a Workship application form.  This form is available as a download on the Institute website, at www.globalyouthstudies.org/admissions.  Once the application is received, if positions are available, the student must complete a personal interview with Institute Workship staff.

1. New applications for assistance must submit the Institute Workship Application for the appropriate semester to be considered for any aid.

2. Applicants for Workships must complete a personal interview with Workship staff.

3. Applicants are required to notify the Institute of any other scholarships or loans extended to them from sources outside the Institute.

Award Notification for the Institute

Applicants will be notified of their Workship opportunity via an Award Letter. The Workship Acceptance Form should be signed and returned to the Institute within the time specified on the Acceptance Form.  The Award Letter will not show scholarships from outside sources as these funds are credited directly to the student’s account as received by the Institute.

The Award for an Institute Workship is the amount a student may expect to earn during the academic semester contingent upon actual placement in a job assignment and actual hours worked. Students must report to the Institute Registrar’s office upon arrival on campus for job assignment and clearance.

Disbursement

Disbursement of awards for a semester Workship is made by crediting the student’s account.  The amount the student earns during the semester will be credited to the his/her student account, unless the amount exceeds any balance owed on the account. Information Regarding Workship and Scholarship Restrictions

Adjustments

Award amounts for awards assume a minimum of 15 credit hours per semester. A student taking fewer or more than 15 hours will have his/her award package prorated according to actual hours enrolled and terms of the particular scholarship.

Financial assistance will be adjusted as follows if a student withdraws from all classes:

a. Institute assistance will be prorated according to the same schedule used to refund tuition.

b. Scholarships received from outside sources will be used to satisfy any remaining balance a student may owe, unless specified by the source to be returned in full or in part.

c. Withdrawal occurring on or before the 60% period of enrollment, calculated using calendar days, will require a portion of Federal Funds (Pell Grant, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Stafford Loan, Federal PLUS Loan but not Federal Work Study) be returned in accordance with the provisions of the Higher Education Act of 1998. This calculation may result in the student owing a balance to Union University or the Federal Government.

Requirements/Provisions

Institute scholarships require a student to maintain a minimum GPA to retain the scholarship. Exact GPA requirements are specified on the Award Letter.

Disclaimers

The Institute reserves the right to review, modify or cancel an award at any time because of changes in financial, enrollment, or academic status; changes of academic program; or because of the recipient’s failure to observe reasonable standards of citizenship.

Satisfactory Academic Progress for Financial Aid Eligibility

The Higher Education Act of 1965, mandates institutions of higher education establish minimum standards of "satisfactory academic progress" for students each term receiving financial assistance. Students must maintain a 2.0 CUM GPA at the Institute.

Incomplete Grades

A grade of Incomplete or In Progress will not be calculated in satisfactory academic progress until the final grade is awarded.

Evaluation of Progress

Satisfactory progress for students in term-based programs will be evaluated at the end of each Fall/Spring Semester.

Notification of Failure to Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress Standards

At the end of each semester, if a student is not making satisfactory progress, the Institute will so inform the student by letter. Unless the student falls under a conditional period as described in this policy, the student will not be eligible to receive any federal financial aid from that point forward. He/She may appeal the decision and if approved may be awarded aid, or if his/her academic progress improves to again meet the standards, and he/she applies for reinstatement of eligibility, then aid may be awarded.

Appeal Process

Students who have lost eligibility due to GPA or Completion Rate may appeal if extenuating circumstances prevented them from making satisfactory progress. Circumstances which are considered extenuating are those that are unusual or unforeseen at the beginning of the semester, such as serious illness or injury of the student, death or serious illness of a close relative, or other situations which were beyond the student's control. Appeal is made in writing to the Director of Financial Aid describing the extenuating circumstances and indicating steps the student plans to take to improve his academic progress.  If the student who loses eligibility does not appeal or the appeal is not approved, he/she will not receive federal aid until regaining eligibility. Students will be informed in writing of the results of their appeal.
